The Stockholm School of Economics started operations and took in its first students 110 years ago, in 1909. The years near the turn of the nineteenth century were years of fast industrial growth in Sweden, which also led to a need for skilled managers and staff. Prominent figures within the Swedish industry and commerce identified that such individuals would need expert education in business practices and theories.

These industry leaders (Olof A. Söderberg, K.A. Wallenberg, and Joseph Nachmanson, and so on) assembled the businessmen and officials of Stockholm, and in 1906 they created the Stockholm School of Economics Association, an establishment with the sole aim of making the dream of a Swedish business school come to fruition.

Three years after that (in 1909), owing to the support of the City of Stockholm, government backing, and donations from private bequests, the Stockholm School of Economics began operations for the first time. Taking in 110 students, the first curriculum ran for two years and entailed economics, commerce, and a mixture of political sciences and law.

The Stockholm School of Economics began its operations at Brunkebergstorg in central Stockholm, located in a commercial building referred to as Brunkebergs hotel. Renting the whole third floor of the hotel, teaching progressed at the premises for almost two decades. As time passed, however, SSE outgrew these locations and hired Swedish architect Ivar Tengbom with drawing up plans for the new facilities.

In 1926, the School opened these new quarters situated at Sveavägen 65, the address of their main building to this day. Generous gifts over the years have afforded SSE the chance to expand on Tengbom’s design, and the original building is flanked by newer buildings, and a lot of additional premises are situated nearby.

The ensuing decades were an exhilarating period of growth for SSE. In 1929, only a few years after the relocation to Sveavägen, the School established its first research institute. Fittingly named the Economic Research Institute, it was created with the objective of carrying out leading research within the areas of economics and commerce.
